Complementary Optimization of Hydropower with Pumped Hydro Storage–Photovoltaic Plant for All-Day Peak Electricity Demand in Malawi

Solar energy is currently dispatched ahead of other renewable sources. For the first time, this study presents a concept exploiting temporary–periodical runoff discharge in Shire River. Pumped hydro storage–photovoltaic plant (PHS–PV) was optimized to satisfy all-day peak electricity demand Malawi. The effect varying net head on PHS system both generation and pumping operation modes investigated. bi-objective optimization evaluated reliability for day-time night-time together with implied costs investment whole system. generated above 53% added power as contrasted single-source from existing hydropower plants. estimated optimal capacities were 182 MWp (solar PV) 86 MW (PHS plant). These additional achieved 99.8% maximum (Loss Power Supply Probability—LPSP—of 0.2%) Levelized Cost Energy—LCOE—of 0.13 USD/kWh. overall cost PHS–PV at 671.23 USD an LPSP 0.20%. varies 15.5 17.8 m impact More notably, production matches daily loads functions peaking plant.
